The Board of Health Smoking Rule was originally adopted in 2012 to regulate smoking in prescribed public areas.  The Rule has since been revised to prohibit more locations to ensure the safety, health, and well-being of Durham County residents.  Click HERE to review the revised Durham County Board of Health Rule.

Smoke-free Outdoor Spaces

Durham County Board of Health Smoking Rule bans smoking and e-cigarette use in many public outdoor spaces, including:

  • Parks
  • Trails
  • Public Sidewalks
  • Bus stops
  • Hospital Grounds

In addition, the Rule bans smoking and e-cigarette use in some indoor areas, including:

  • Public Restrooms
  • Public Areas of Retail Establishments
  • Childcare facilities
